The portal has been out of commission for a few days, while it was being dismantled, moved, and reassembled in its new location. A few days is hardly a long time without seeing each other by their old standards, but now...

Anyway, it's obviously back online when Enzo's voice suddenly calls "Knock, knock!" from the intercom speaker.

Dani can't resist replying, "Who's there?"

Enzo considers this for a moment, then replies, "Maya."

"Maya who?"

"Maya partment's all set up!"

"That's great!" Dani cheers. "Got time for a quick tour?"

"I've even got time for a long tour." Beat. "Not enough apartment, though."

Dani chuckles. "Give me a couple nanos," she says before running off.

Several nanos later the portal activates and Dani steps through. "Sorry," she apologizes. "I had to save a paper I was working on."

"No problem," says Enzo, kissing her hello. "What's it on?"

"The economy of the state of colonial Maine." She makes a face, but it's at the topic of her paper and not the kiss.

Blink. Blink blink.

"Rrright. So! The apartment!" He gestures about them.

It is, indeed, not a huge apartment, but it's quite adequate as studios go. The walls are a warm, pale grey, and a large portion of one is occupied by the portal Dani has just come through. One corner is occupied by an old version of WinAmp and two beanbag chairs; across the room, a chocolate-brown futon is set up to face in that direction as well. Enzo's surfbaud is hovering in front of it as a makeshift table. There is a closet door, and a bathroom door, and a kitchen half-separated from the main space by a counter. A window like a flat bookshelf holds his comic bytes, and his guitar is propped in a corner.

A few decorations hang on on the walls: a couple of posters, his replica of Hexadecimal's mask, his spare swords, the latest family JPEG, Hiccup's dragon sketch, and the drawing of the two of them Dani gave him when he turned 10.

Dani looks around with a semi-critical eye, taking it all in. "Very nice," she says finally. "So what's it like living on your own?"

"A little weird. Especially at night. It'll be better now that I know you're right upstairs.

"I'm not totally alone, though." He has a surpriiiise...

"Oh?"

"Remember that T-Minus chat system, and how I didn't want to get it while I was still at the Academy 'cause I thought it might digitize as live data?"

"Yeah..."

Enzo whistles sharply. "Minus! C'mere!"

A chiming noise, like an incoming instant message, comes from the bathroom, followed by a small, green, levitating nautiloid creature. It zips over to them and pings curiously at Dani.

Dani laughs, reaching up to touch or pet the little creature. "Hi there!" she greets it.

Chiming again, Minus extends its tentacles and prods back at Dani's fingertips.

"Isn't he cute? I'm kinda goin' with 'he' until I find out different, but code knows how you tell. Don't suppose you know how to sex a nautilus?"

She shakes her head with a grin. "Not a clue," she answers. "Never really came up in my biology classes."

"You call that an education?" He grins back.

"Okay, so you've seen the new apartment and the new pet. Want to check out the new sector?"

Dani nods. "Lead the way."

On the way out, he points out where he has left a spare key. "In case you want to come through while I'm out.

"Oh, and if we don't let the gang throw us their own engagement party, they threatened to help decorate. I'm not quite sure what they meant by that, but I don't think I want to risk it."

"Awesome; thanks." Not that Dani would ever have ulterior motives for that; oh, no.

At this revelation Dani's eyes widen in what might be fear. "Oh- no. I don't think I want to either."

"We'll just have to put up with another party, then."

"I think I'll be able to find the strength to manage it."
