Dear Dani,

I've been in the Supercomputer for a cycle and a half. It's amazing! I haven't seen a lot besides the Academy yet except when we were driving through, but it's huge and they don't just have everything, they've got a LOT of everything. I got a bunch of postcards to send you but I might have to include them as attachments to regular letters 'cause I don't know if I can write small enough.

I'm in room D5. My new roommates are alphanumeric so far, but they're all totally random. Hugh's the oldest. He says his favourite things to do are playing with machines and "hacking the norms." As soon as I came into the room, he grabbed me and made me help him test this cannon he built that fires code slush! Balun's from the Supercomputer and his aunt Maxine is an old friend of Bob's. She's a search engine and so's his mom; his dad's a mechanic. He said they met when his mom needed a tune-up, and then Hugh started making jokes that I don't think I'm supposed to understand. Caret's new like me. He's kinda weird. His bunk's under mine, and he hung a dead, preserved toaster from the bottom of my mattress as decoration. And when we were walking to the big assembly today, he started outputting poetry. I asked him why, and he said he didn't think he needed a reason. I guess that's true.

After Dot and Bob left yesterday, Hugh and Balun showed me around campus. Caret got here a couple cycles before me so he saw it already. The dorm's the big tower. There's sixteen floors with eight bedrooms each except the ground floor, and the one of the oldest cadets is on each floor as a moderator. Each floor has a common area and a kitchen, and floor 0's a big lounge. There's a pool table! The big low building's Academy CTRL, that's kind of like a Principal Office for the Academy. It's got the bookstore and the cafeteria and an auditorium and a lot of offices. All the little domes are the training cluster. There's separate little buildings for everything, like gymnastics and the shooting range and the pool. The four medium-sized buildings have the classrooms. Tron Hall's for the classes like Viral Studies and Game Theory. You know, the real Guardian stuff, but the parts you have to sit down and read for. Dumont Hall has things like Internet Studies and Interface Protocols. Most of the classes in there sound boring, but they're supposed to be important. The Read-Only Room is in there too. Yori Hall is the biggest, and it doesn't have regular classrooms because it's for vehicle training and labs and simulations. Ram Hall has all the stuff that isn't really important for Guardianship but they want us to download it anyway.

Hugh took us all out into the city for dinner last night. He said it was our last chance to eat real food. The sectors around the Academy have lots of cafes and stores and Java lounges and arcades and fileshops. We went to a Sintran place called HotFix for curry. It was good but I had to drink three cool shakes and then I didn't sleep so good.

We have to log on early here. There's no alarm clocks, they broadcast reveille to wake us up instead, and then the mods take us to breakfast. All the food is supposed to be really good for you, so it tastes gross. Since this was the first cycle, we had an assembly after breakfast. Turbo was there and he made a speech, he said welcome to us newbies and welcome back to everyone else, and he talked about how after Daemon it's important for us to show everyone we're still the 'Net's protectors and stuff like that, and then all of a sudden he was talking about Mainframe and me! He told everyone I was there and I was the one who saved everyone's bitmaps, and everyone was looking around for me but they didn't know which one I was and he didn't say, but it was so embarrassing! And he said everyone's grateful for what I did, but he doesn't want people bugging me or whispering about me, so now everyone knows I'm really here so they don't have to spread rumours. And it was awful but I guess maybe it worked, because after the assembly we went to our classes and they took roll call and when I got called on everyone stared but then they stopped staring so I guess they remembered what Turbo said. And at lunch some kids came and asked me about what I did with Daemon, but I told them Dot said I wasn't supposed to talk about it, and they didn't keep asking.

We didn't have to process much today. Mostly the teachers told us what we're going to be learning for the rest of the term and gave us our TXTbooks. Most of my classes start with Introduction To. Balun said the first classes are all pretty general and I'll learn the details later. Except in Physical Fitness we started right away because there wasn't much they had to tell us, we just run and climb things.

Dinner was gross too. After dinner the mods had floor meetings so we could meet each other. The D mod is named Amber. She's a little too nice, but she stopped people when they kept trying to ask me more questions. We all had to say our name and something we like and why we decided to become Guardians. I said jetball and I wanted to be a Guardian because it's exciting and I want to help people. Most of the others said the same reasons. One girl, Kyrka, said she became a Guardian because life is bogus and it's her duty to decrease its bogosity. She's Balun's age. Hugh said he's one "so people won't see it coming." Amber looked kind of worried whenever he said anything.

Then we went down to the lounge to hang out with kids from the other floors, and I guess someone from D told other people who I was because everyone kept staring at me and trying not to and it was really awkward, but then one kid, I think his name's Nick, said what about Ultimate P.O.N.G. so some of us went out to the Hub, that's the green in the middle of campus, and we had a game and that was fun and they stopped staring after that.

"Sixteen nanos to logoff time!" comes Amber's desperately cheerful voice through the door. "That means you, Balun!"

"Yes, ma'am," shouts Balun, making a face at the door.

"She's pretty," Caret says from the end of Enzo's bunk. "Who is she?"

"Amber?" Enzo gives Caret an odd look, as the latter never in fact asked permission to climb up, but... eh. "She's our mod."

Caret shakes his head and points to the picture on Enzo's nightstand. "No, her. You're writing to her."

Enzo stares at the picture and back at Caret. "She's my best friend. How'd you know?"

"You said you were writing your sister before, but you finished the first letter, and you keep looking at the picture."

Enzo wonders just how long Caret has been clinging to the ladder without his noticing.

"C'n I see?" Balun asks. Enzo shrugs and passes the framed picture to Caret, who clambers down the ladder and offers it for inspection. Balun looks at it and nods. "What's her name?"

"Danielle Fenton. Dani."

"Thought you said there weren't any other small sprites in your system?" Hugh says, leaning over the edge of his top bunk. Balun passes the picture up to him.

Uh-oh. Think fast. "There aren't. She's from here, actually, but she's, um, traveling. Around the 'Net. Bob used to know her parents, so she stayed with Dot and me when she visited Mainframe. 'Cause we had more room. And now she's my best friend." That makes sense, right? Huh?

"Cool," says Balun. Enzo sags in relief.

Hugh drops the picture back down to Balun. "I guess she's cute for that age. I like my girl better, though." He pats a picture on his wall of a bikini-clad woman. "She doesn't hold unreasonable expectations."

"'Cause you copied-and-pasted her from a zine," Balun points out.

Hugh leans against the wall, presses his cheek to the pin-up, and rolls his eyes wistfully. "Why must people judge us so?"

"Eight nanos!"

Enzo laughs and accepts his picture back from Caret.

It's bedtime now. I'll write again soon. Say hi to everyone for me. I miss you.

Enzo
