"Like grill marks?" she asks.

[a1enzo]

"Hey, there's an idea! And that'd be easier than cutting out her insignia. Maybe that on one layer and the cut-and-paste icon on the other?"

"That does sound like a good idea," she says, making a note on the mock-up map. "...but I've never done anything like this before."

[a1enzo]

"Me neither, but there's gotta be some way. Bar? Can I, like, cook a picture into a piece of jerky?"

There's a pause, and then an art catalog appears on the bartop, open to a page of woodburning equipment.

"Huh... that could work."

[halfemptyglasses]

"I guess that'd do it," Mirai agrees.

And she'll stay back and watch, thanks. She doesn't need to mess with anything that burns.

"What should I put it on, the plain beef?"

[halfemptyglasses]

"Yeah. That's kind of like the plain chocolate, isn't it?"

She makes another note in the middle of the mock-up map.

"Yeah, like the default jerky. Okay, Bar, I'll give that a try."

The tool in question replaces the catalog on the bartop. Enzo thinks for a moment, then removes the stud from his right earlobe to use as a reference.

Mirai watches as he works, trying not to take too many pieces of jerky as she does. He picked really good stuff!

His first attempt is slightly shaky. He considers it for a moment, shakes his head, and passes it to Mirai before reaching for another piece.

"It's not bad," she says, looking at it before taking a bite.

[a1enzo]

"Yeah, but I can do better."

Steeeeeady....

Mirai keeps back and keeps quiet. She's snatching enough jerky without disturbing Enzo's work.

Though she could use a drink with all this tasting. She orders a strawberry soda, sharing it with her T-Minus.

"There. How's that look?" He passes Mirai the earring for comparison.

It takes a moment to stop herself from just eating it. This one isn't for her! She forces herself to grab the soda instead.

"Looks good to me," she says with an approving nod.

[a1enzo]

"Rad." He places it into the appropriate wrapper. "Should I do the icon the same way, or like we said with cut-and-paste?" He points to his. "It's only straight lines, but I'm not sure how to keep the pieces together."

"Maybe do it like a stencil?" she suggests. "Or just sit the pieces together in the wrapper. It won't really have to stay together for long.

[a1enzo]

"That's true. Bar, can I have a clean scissors, please?" A suitable implement appears.

He considers the bags of jerky, selects a spicy turkey and a teriyaki beef and presents them to Mirai. "Taste-test?"

She accepts the pieces and tries them one right after the other. She makes a small "mmm" sound and nods her head in approval.

"Alphanumeric, thanks."

He snips out a reasonably neat triangle of each, then does his best to sculpt a semicircle-minus-triangle out of the remains.

Hey, like Mirai cares if he messes up. More jerky for her. But she'll keep marking the mock-up in the meantime.

"Does this look good?" she asks. "I think I can start filling out the real map."

[a1enzo]

"Looks good to me. Here…" From somewhere around his belt, he produces a small brass pince-nez. "My spellchecker."

He'd tell her not to laugh, but she could probably use more laughter.

She covers her mouth on a little giggle. "Those old-timey glasses?"

[a1enzo]

"They were a present," he says with an exaggerated scowl. "Anyway, they do the job."

[halfemptyglasses]

Unfortunately, she has trouble reading the exaggeration. "Ah, I'm sorry! I shouldn't be mean."
