Spectral Analysis [The Cure, Part 2]

Once more, Enzo emerges from the Matrices' closet. "Mouse?" he calls. "You got everything? Did Oracle show up okay?"

"Not to mention the other inventions she came up with. Mouse's the one to thank for our Incoming game warning system." Dot says. "She's still making money over the royalties on that little number."

"And Game sprite mode," Enzo points out.

He flinches guiltily at the mention of Danny's best friend. "Maybe we shoulda brought Tucker along. We do owe him a visit."

"Tucker can't stand to be anywhere in the vicinity of hospitals or anything remotely resembling them. I figured maybe we could do another visit later if it was okay with you guys, but this time, he would have spent most of his time waiting outside for the rest of us if he'd come."

"Ohhh." Enzo grimaces. "That'd be worse than the waiting room. 'Kay."

Dani also winces. "Do Tucker and Sam know what we're doing?"

"...No?" Shifty. "I, uh, kind of did the impulsive not-telling-my-best-friends-what's-going-on thing again."

Dani makes a show of frowning and folding her arms over her chest. "And how well did that work last time?" she asks Danny.

"...Moderately okay at the end?"

That sounds... um... eesh.

"Maybe they won't mind too much if we invite them to the wedding too?" He looks to Dot and Bob for, hopefully, approval.

"We'll see about setting up a special section for our friends from Milliways."

At this rate there are going to be at least 2 dozen showing up. "Or setting up a tour after the vacation."

"What's that s'poseta mean?" Enzo demands, although he's got an idea (which is probably exactly what Dot doesn't want).

"It means that we don't want to come back from User-space and find that you've brought half the Bar to Mainframe."

"I wasn't gonna." He pauses, and then a wicked grin spreads across his face. Because oh man that'd be funny.

Bob knows that look all too well.

"No inviting people over without permission from me or your sister. That's an order, Cadet."

Enzo rolls his eyes and salutes. "Yes, sir," he says with a sort of amused resignation.

Just as well. They'd never get the mess from the party cleaned up before the grown-ups got home.

Considering how complex the project at hand is, Mouse and Oracle must be really on top of things since it's only about a millisecond before Oracle steps (using her legs!) out into the waiting room and looks around. Dani's easy to spot since everyone is congregated nearby.

"Dani? We're ready for you."

Dani takes a deep breath, and exhales. "Okay."

She walks over towards Oracle, trying to look as brave and confident as possible. When she reaches the door to the other room she stops, looks over her shoulder at everyone (at Danny and Enzo) and smiles.

Then she's through the door.

Oracle waves at the examination table, "Go ahead and lie down again, Dani." She steps back behind the control console. "The procedure is pretty straightforward. We'll be suspending various parts of your code, repairing them, and then re-integrating them to your overall program. Because we'll be doing code suspensions, you won't really be conscious. It'll be like being asleep. When you wake up, you'll be good to go."

"Yeah, won't take a nano," Mouse says reassuringly, "although you're gonna need a while t'rest after that."

Dani nods. "All right."

Oracle turns to the various vidwindows she has open around her, checking the data one last time. Then she nods to Mouse, "I'm ready when you are."

"All ready," Mouse says, giving Dani and Oracle the thumbs-up. "Suspending now.."

Dani tries to stay calm as she waits for Oracle and Mouse to begin. She wonders what suspension will feel like, if it'll be anything like being knocked unconscious not that she knows anything about that, of course. Or if she'll just close her eyes here one minute and open them the next in...wherever her recovery room is supposed to be. Did Enzo tell her where she'd be after the procedure? She can't remember. And she's too tired to try to remember anyway. Maybe if she just closes her eyes for a minute...
